This hands-on, one-day workshop grounded in science will help law enforcement, military, fire, and emergency medical professionals build psychological flexibility for peak performance.

A significant part of law enforcement, military, fire, and emergency medical service work involves responding to events involving tragedy, death, serious injuries, violence, or life-threatening situations. The nature of these events is that they are more likely to cause psychological harm or injury. Consequently, they naturally trigger the stress response, which might overwhelm your ability to function effectively during or after the event. In this one-day workshop, you will learn a practical approach to using acceptance and commitment training (ACT) principles and practices to handle the stress encountered at work, home, or wherever you are and live a life with more purpose. Frank J. Gallo, Ph.D.–a retired police officer–will walk you through a step-by-step method that rests on the effectiveness of ACT. This hands-on workshop is designed for preservice or inservice training.

At the end of the workshop, you will walk away with a valuable set of skills. Through a variety of learning methods, such as experiential exercises, videos, case examples, demonstrations, and a PowerPoint presentation, you should be able to:

  1. Identify the components of the Crosshairs Model.
  2. Use the Crosshairs Model to categorize behaviors.
  3. Define what psychological flexibility means.
  4. Identify the overall goal of mindfulness training.
  5. Demonstrate mindfulness and breathing exercises.
  6. Identify at least one values statement and goal.
